A key that turns and nothing happens, a door that closed behind you, glass on the floor of the back porch. Emergency calls begin with a plain question about who is standing at the door and end with that door locking properly again.

Change or Rekey Locks

A home has a rhythm: school runs, dog walkers, cleaners, grown children with old keys. Our residential work fits the locks to that rhythm, whether that means a single rekey, a keypad for the side door or a full set of matching deadbolts.

  1. Hands holding a lock cylinder and a ring of keys above a worn workbench with another cylinder and loose keys. — Lock Rekeying, Mordolphin
Lock RekeyingThree months of renovation are finally done. The kitchen looks wonderful, and along the way a general contractor, a tile installer, a plumber and an electrician each carried a key to your front door at one point or…
  2. Close view of a satin-nickel deadbolt thumbturn and edge faceplate on a painted timber door. — Deadbolt Installation, Mordolphin
Deadbolt InstallationYou bought a keypad deadbolt online and pulled the old one off, only to find the hole in the door is a different size and the bolt latch sits at a backset the new kit does not list. The door is now open and the box is…
  3. Detached satin-nickel lever hardware, tubular latch and strike plate on a wooden workbench. — Lock Replacement & Upgrade, Mordolphin
Lock Replacement & UpgradeThe century home's original mortise lock takes a key the size of a spoon, sticks in humid weather and has worn its strike to a groove. You want a lock that works every day without giving up the old door.
  4. Closed mortise lock case with spindle opening, keyhole, latch and deadbolt on a wooden workbench. — Vintage Mortise Lock Service, Mordolphin
Vintage Mortise Lock ServiceThe old skeleton key still fits the keyhole, but it now needs a jiggle, a lean on the door and a little luck before the bolt moves. Last week it took three tries.
  5. Person holding a black door-handle assembly and a latch beside a glazed door with exposed lock openings. — Smart Lock Installation, Mordolphin
Smart Lock InstallationYou have just taken possession of the house and the previous owners handed over a keypad deadbolt with a code nobody wrote down and an app account you cannot get into. It needs to become yours, properly, or be replaced.
  6. Detached rim gate lock and separate box keeper on an outdoor workbench. — Gate & Building Entry Locks, Mordolphin
Gate & Building Entry LocksSomeone pried at the gate latch overnight, and now the strike plate hangs by one screw and the cylinder spins loose in its housing. The gate still closes, technically, but a firm shoulder is all it would take to open it…
  7. Two loose cam locks and a retaining clip resting below an open metal mailbox compartment. — Mailbox Lock Replacement, Mordolphin
Mailbox Lock ReplacementThe mail slot on the shop's exterior wall has a small compartment lock that a former employee still has a key to, months after they left. Nobody on staff can say with any confidence who else might hold a copy.

Request a security walkthrough in Mordolphin

We treat the whole door in Mordolphin, not just the cylinder. Hinges that have sagged, a strike plate held by short screws, a frame that has moved with the seasons: these decide whether a lock holds, and they are checked on every visit. Sometimes the right advice is a longer screw and a shim rather than a new lock, and we say so.

Mordolphin information

2021 census · what it means at the door

  • 46%Homes of every age

About 46% of homes in Severn were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

Older frames and newer frames fail in different ways. Settled wood pulls strikes out of line; new framing settles as it dries. A locksmith used to a mixed area recognises which he is looking at and adjusts accordingly.

  • 90%Mostly houses

Single-detached houses make up about 90% of homes in Severn (2021 Census).

Homeowners in houses often want a spare key that lives outside safely. A locksmith can fit a proper key safe or set up a keypad so a hidden key under a pot is no longer part of the plan.

You reached the front step with the groceries, patted every pocket twice, and the house key is simply not there. It was on the ring this morning. Now the door is locked, the lights are off, and nothing you have on you opens it.

My key turns but the door stays locked. What is going on?

A key that spins freely without moving the bolt usually means the connection between the cylinder and the bolt has failed: the tailpiece or cam at the back of the cylinder has broken or slipped, or the internal parts of an older mortise lock have worn. The good news is that this is a hardware fault rather than a lost key, so once the door is opened the fix is a repaired or replaced cylinder and your keys keep working.

What is an interchangeable core, and how do I know if we have one?

An interchangeable core is a small, self-contained cylinder that slides out of the lock with a special control key and drops back in on a new combination. Look at the keyway: a figure-eight shaped face on a lever or mortise housing is the usual sign. Buildings choose them because a lost key or a staff change is handled by swapping the core rather than taking the lock apart, and a locksmith can carry cores pinned to your system.

Can several employees each get their own code once the safe is open?

Many electronic locks support more than one user code, so a manager and one or more backup employees can each be set up separately during the same visit rather than sharing a single combination. A mechanical dial only holds one combination at a time, so multiple access there means agreeing who holds it and how that changes when staff do.

What is the difference between a fire rating and a burglary rating?

They come from two different kinds of tests, and burglary ratings are not all one kind either. Some are timed in minutes, measuring how long a trained attempt with real tools takes to force the door open; others are construction classifications based on steel thickness rather than a timed attack. A fire rating is measured in hours, from a furnace test tracking how hot the interior gets while the outside reaches roughly 850 to 1,000 degrees Celsius. A high number on one says nothing about the other.

Can my existing locks be used, or do I need all new hardware?

Many existing cylinders can join a new hierarchy as they are, once their keyway and condition are confirmed compatible. Others, particularly older or mismatched hardware, are replaced so the whole system pins cleanly without cross-keying. The assessment identifies which doors fall into each group before any work begins, so the plan reflects what is actually on the property rather than assuming everything needs to change.
