Technician in a cap using a yellow drill at the round bore of a dark door, with a black knob below it.

Locksmith in Oro-Medonte, OntarioWinter is hardon locks. We know.

Freeze-thaw swells doors, road salt eats at brass, and a cylinder that was fine in October seizes in February. We free jammed locks without forcing them, adjust doors that have shifted, and use lubricants that stay workable well below zero.

White door with a lever handle and an empty round bore above it, beside a toolbox and a deadbolt on a towel.

From the shop

We look after the door, not just the lock.

When a key snaps off in the lock, the temptation is to dig at it with whatever is in the kitchen drawer. We would gently suggest not. The right extractor slides alongside the broken blade and draws it out without scoring the pins, which means the cylinder survives and only the key needs replacing.

Lockout Services

A key that turns and nothing happens, a door that closed behind you, glass on the floor of the back porch. Emergency calls begin with a plain question about who is standing at the door and end with that door locking properly again.

Change or rekey

Change or Rekey Locks

A home has a rhythm: school runs, dog walkers, cleaners, grown children with old keys. Our residential work fits the locks to that rhythm, whether that means a single rekey, a keypad for the side door or a full set of matching deadbolts.

Lock RekeyingThree months of renovation are finally done. The kitchen looks wonderful, and along the way a general contractor, a tile installer, a plumber and an electrician each carried a key to your front door at one point or…
  2. Close view of a satin-nickel deadbolt thumbturn and edge faceplate on a painted timber door. — Deadbolt Installation, Oro-Medonte
Deadbolt InstallationYou bought a keypad deadbolt online and pulled the old one off, only to find the hole in the door is a different size and the bolt latch sits at a backset the new kit does not list. The door is now open and the box is…
  3. Detached satin-nickel lever hardware, tubular latch and strike plate on a wooden workbench. — Lock Replacement & Upgrade, Oro-Medonte
Lock Replacement & UpgradeThe century home's original mortise lock takes a key the size of a spoon, sticks in humid weather and has worn its strike to a groove. You want a lock that works every day without giving up the old door.
  4. Closed mortise lock case with spindle opening, keyhole, latch and deadbolt on a wooden workbench. — Vintage Mortise Lock Service, Oro-Medonte
Vintage Mortise Lock ServiceThe old skeleton key still fits the keyhole, but it now needs a jiggle, a lean on the door and a little luck before the bolt moves. Last week it took three tries.
  5. Person holding a black door-handle assembly and a latch beside a glazed door with exposed lock openings. — Smart Lock Installation, Oro-Medonte
Smart Lock InstallationYou have just taken possession of the house and the previous owners handed over a keypad deadbolt with a code nobody wrote down and an app account you cannot get into. It needs to become yours, properly, or be replaced.
  6. Detached rim gate lock and separate box keeper on an outdoor workbench. — Gate & Building Entry Locks, Oro-Medonte
Gate & Building Entry LocksSomeone pried at the gate latch overnight, and now the strike plate hangs by one screw and the cylinder spins loose in its housing. The gate still closes, technically, but a firm shoulder is all it would take to open it…
  7. Two loose cam locks and a retaining clip resting below an open metal mailbox compartment. — Mailbox Lock Replacement, Oro-Medonte
Mailbox Lock ReplacementThe mail slot on the shop's exterior wall has a small compartment lock that a former employee still has a key to, months after they left. Nobody on staff can say with any confidence who else might hold a copy.

A safe is only useful if you can open it and no one else can. Safe opening, combination changes, relocking after a lost code and installation of new units are commercial services here, whether the safe holds cash, documents or medication.

How a visit goes

Most of the value in a deadbolt is on the frame side, which is why a good installation spends as much time on the jamb as on the door. The bolt is only as strong as the pocket it throws into and the screws that hold the strike.

Drawing: a house seen from the street. The van pulls up, the garage door is opened for the work, then it closes level and the porch light comes on.
  1. 1 of 3

    Counting the doors and keys

We walk the house with you, note every exterior lock and ask which doors you want on one key. That decides the pin work and the number of keys to cut.

  2. 2 of 3

    Pinning the cylinders

Each cylinder comes out, gets new pins to match a fresh key, and goes back in. Old keys stop working the moment the cylinder is back in place.

  3. 3 of 3

Testing every door with every key

We try each new key in each lock, from outside and inside, hand you the set and explain how many copies exist so you know exactly who can get in.

  • 44%Homes of every age

About 44% of homes in Oro-Medonte were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

A mix of eras means a mix of bores and backsets. Standard modern sizes on one door, older dimensions on the door across the street. Carrying adapter plates and cylinders in both ranges lets a locksmith fit upgrades cleanly to either.

  • 97%Mostly houses

Single-detached houses make up about 97% of homes in Oro-Medonte (2021 Census).

Where most homes are detached houses, each one has several exterior doors: front, side, back, garage entry, sometimes a walkout. Getting them all onto one key is the most requested job, and it usually takes a single visit.

What do backset and bore mean, and why does the locksmith ask?

Two measurements decide whether a deadbolt fits your door. Bore is the diameter of the big hole through the face, 54 mm on most current hardware. Backset is how far the centre of that hole sits from the door's edge, 60 mm or 70 mm on nearly all residential doors. A replacement must match both to use the existing holes, and a fresh installation is cut to match the knob below, so knowing them ahead puts the right hardware on the van.

Can a deadbolt be added to a door that only has a knob?

Yes, on nearly any wood, steel-clad or fibreglass entry door. The locksmith marks a spot above the knob, clamps a jig to the door and bores a cross hole through the face and a smaller hole through the edge, then cuts a pocket and fits a strike on the frame. The main things checked first are the door's thickness, what is inside it at that height and whether glass sits close by.

Can I supply my own deadbolt?

Yes. Bring the box, the template and the instructions, and tell the locksmith the model beforehand so the bore and backset can be checked against your door. If the kit turns out to need a larger hole or a different faceplate than the door has, the locksmith adapts the door or suggests a matching model. Hardware bought online sometimes arrives set for a different door thickness, which is a small adjustment on site.

What are the hardware grades I see on the packaging?

Locks and deadbolts are tested against industry standards for security, durability and finish. Commercial hardware is graded 1, 2 or 3 with grade 1 the highest. Residential hardware carries a letter label for each of the three categories, from C for good through B to A for the top level. Security tests include hammer blows and pulling on the lock; durability covers cycle life and seasonal misalignment; finish covers salt, humidity and scratching. Your locksmith translates the label for your door.
